Are you feeling stuck and unfulfilled in your career or life? According to the longest study on human happiness—the Harvard Study of Adult Development—they have found a clear answer: It’s the quality of your relationships, not your resume or bank account, that shapes your well-being. This happiness and well-being transfer to all aspects of human life.
According to George Vaillant, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the results from this 86-year and counting study affirm that warm and loving relationships are primary factors in human flourishing. Vaillant asserts, “The only thing that really matters in life are your relationships to other people,” and “Happiness equals love—full stop.” Of the 724 families who participated in the study, those who reported having warm and supportive relationships thrived in the primary domains of life, including financial, career, health, life satisfaction, and quality relationships.
As you navigate career pivots and life transitions and ponder the deeper existential questions of your life, the support and connection of others are more critical than ever. I know that the connection and support I have experienced from family, friends, and colleagues have made all the difference in my life.
Question for you: Who are the people you want to walk this next stretch of life with?
